You asked, and we created! Join Sue Newman for a fun and focused 2-day intensive to develop ballet based dance skills and structure. Ballet supports ALL styles of dance as a foundational training.

Sue will be leading ballet classes for young dancers, introducing them to “the basics” of the genre. Through the beginning “barre” exercises that involve learning about posture, “line” and “turnout”, the dancer will start to strengthen and stretch the muscles required to eventually master the safe, large motor skills of leaping, jumping and reaching, as well as executing the smaller, minutia of delicate movement.

Graduating into “centre floor”, will take the dancer into a more refined examination of the barre, but now balance and “enchainment”- or the stringing together of movements- will be explored. This also encourages the need for the continued learning of terminology, which is a huge part of understanding anything!

“Across the floor”, which consists of leaps, turns and other, traveling patterns; “batterie”, which focusses on jumps, “beats” and other leg/foot detail work; and “free dance”, or interpreting a piece of music with one’s own ideas, will round out each class.

Of course, along the way, students will also learn a little about music and musicality, stage directions, theatre protocol, concept of storytelling through movement, costume, lights....and the collaborative nature also inherent in any art form!

Sue looks forward to welcoming your dancer into the world of Ballet!

**There will be a 3 day intensive in February, and a teens/adults option in the new year session too!
